On the history of the dry friction law

We discuss the role played by Amontons, Coulomb, Leonardo daVinci,Morin, and Euler in the discovery of the dry friction law. In particular, reference is given to Euler’s 1748 paper,where an exhaustive statement of the dry friction law was given 37 years before Coulomb’s main publications.

Simple model for dry friction

The basis of dry friction is discussed using an independent oscillator model with longitudinal motion. This sample system is treated both numerically and with analytical methods. At vanishing velocity a sliding dry friction force is calculated which is smaller than the pinning force.

Abstract The problem of the brachystochrone with dry friction is governed by an autonomous set of highly non-linear ordinary differential equations, which contain a small parameter μ (the coefficient of friction). Using perturbation technique an approximate solution is constructed.

Dry friction in micromagnetics

Dry friction is introduced into the Landau-Lifshitz equations. Numerical simulations show sustained motions or transitions to rest in a critical state. Hysteresis and Barkhausen noise can be modeled with simple structures. Dry friction in the Landau-Lifshitz equation can be a useful element in the modeling of ferromagnets. >
