Drying Stress and Strain of Wood: A Review [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Wood drying stress causes various drying defects, which result from the wood microstructure and the transfer of heat and mass during the drying. It is the fundamental way to solve the problem of defects to clarify the law and mechanism of wood stress and

Progress in the Study of Dry Shrinkage Deformation and Drying Stress of Raw Bamboo

open access: yesBioResources
Bamboo is a sustainable material that supports carbon sequestration and helps address the imbalance of timber supply vs. demand. Drying is a crucial step in bamboo processing, in the course of which shrinkage and stress accumulation can lead to defects ...

Drying Stress Relaxation of Wood Subjected to Microwave Radiation

open access: yesBioResources, 2015
An effective and rapid drying stress relieving technique was developed using microwave conditioning. The process was analyzed by measuring the stress factor and moisture content gradient through the thickness of the board. The experiments showed that the

Stress characteristics and stress reversal mechanism of white birch (Betula platyphylla) disks under different drying conditions

open access: yesMaderas: Ciencia y TecnologĂa, 2016
Drying stress is the main cause for the generation of drying cracks in wood disks during drying, which limits the processing and utilization of this valuable material.

The tensile stress generated in clay through drying

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Engineering Research, 1987
A tensile stress is generated in a drying bar of clay that is prevented from shrinking in one direction. Theory predicts that after an initial period of drying the stress is equal to a constant fraction of the equivalent soil—water suction P (as inferred from the water content). The latter stage is independent of the initial water content of the bar.

Drying patterns: Sensitivity to residual stresses [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2009
Volume alteration in solid materials is a common cause of material failure. Here we investigate the crack formation in thin elastic layers attached to a substrate. We show that small variations in the volume contraction and substrate restraint can produce widely different crack patterns ranging from spirals to complex hierarchical networks.

Heterogeneous Drying Stresses in Stratum Corneum [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2012
We study the drying of stratum corneum, the skin's outermost layer and an essential barrier to mechanical and chemical stresses from the environment. Even though stratum corneum exhibits structural features across multiple length-scales, contemporary understanding of the mechanical properties of stratum corneum is based on the assumption that its ...
