Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Correlating fissure occurrence to rice quality for various drying and tempering treatments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
When a rice kernel fissures, it can break in subsequent food processing operations and lose its commercial value. Head rice yield (HRY) is a measure of the percent of kernels that remain whole (at least three-fourths of original length) after rice has ...

The Effect of Fatigue and Stress on Dry eye

open access: yesThe Korean Journal of Vision Science, 2017
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between dry eye by fatigue and stress. Methods: Using the survey data aimed at a total of 365 adults aged 19 and over, the subjects’ sociodemographic variables, Fatigue Severity Scale, Stress Scale, and Ocular Surface Disease Index were applied in a self-administering way, and the cross ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Control of Internal Moisture Transfer Direction and Lateral Moisturization to Mitigate Drying Defects in Large-Cross Section Timber

open access: yesBioResources
Methods for surface moisturization and control of internal moisture movement have been developed to minimize moisture gradients and reduce drying defects, such as cracks, in large cross-sectional timbers used for restoring palaces, temples, and cultural ...

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Computer Simulation of Drying Stresses in Wood

open access: yesJournal of the Society of Materials Science, Japan, 1973
Computer simulation was conducted to assess the effect of the rate of drying on stress in wood during drying. Numerical calculations for the simulation were carried out with an electronic computer FACOM 270-20/30. Examples of the flow chart and FORTRAN programs used are shown in the text where we assumed that the stress follows the integro-differential

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for
