Direct and indirect fitness effects of plant metabolites, and genetic constraints, limit evolution of allelopathy in an invading plant

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 4, Page 806-823, April 2025.
Competition favours lower glucosinolate investment across 22 North American accessions of Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard). Leaf glucosinolate concentration is highly plastic and correlated with leaf chlorophyll a concentration. Genotypes that invest more into glucosinolate production (i.e.

The PteridoPortal: A publicly accessible collection of over three million records of extant and extinct pteridophytes

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 13, Issue 2, March-April 2025.
Abstract Premise Pteridophytes—vascular land plants that disperse by spores—are a powerful system for studying plant evolution, particularly with respect to the impact of abiotic factors on evolutionary trajectories through deep time. However, our ability to use pteridophytes to investigate such questions—or to capitalize on the ecological and ...

Is There a Key Primer for Amplification of Core Land Plant DNA Barcode Regions (rbcL and matK)?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 2, February 2025.
We use in silico PCR to select and measure the amplification capability of primer. We tested 366 and 489 published primers for the rbcL and matK regions, respectively, using sequences from 8463 different land plant species. Our results indicate a set of primers that effectively cover all land plant sequences, particularly for the rbcL region.

Uncovering the Potential of Carbon Stocks and Nutrients in Livestock Systems in Zamora Chinchipe

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Soil Science, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Zamora Chinchipe’s soil supports the biodiversity of its forests, but small farmers also use it for agricultural activities. Unsustainable management of these areas contributes to expanding the agricultural frontier, which generates pressure on ecosystems.
