Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

Insolation driven variations of Mercury’s lithospheric strength [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Mercury's coupled 3:2 spin-orbit resonance in conjunction with its relatively high eccentricity of ~0.2 and near-zero obliquity results in both a latitudinal and longitudinal variation in annual average solar insolation and thus equatorial hot and cold ...

Numerical Modeling of Tank Cars Carrying Hazardous Materials With and Without Composite Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Large‐scale puncture models consisting of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) tank car with protective steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) are solved numerically. Tank car plate with added 10.91–13.33 mm thick S–S CMF layer does not puncture. Protective S–S CMF absorbs impact energy, reduces plate deformation, and prevents shear bands formation ...

Austempering in Zamak bath: influence of austempering time and austenitizing temperatureon ductile cast iron properties [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2019
The combination of the austempered ductile iron mechanical properties strongly depend on the parameters used on the austempering cycle. On this study, the influence of austempering time and austenitizing temperature on the properties of a ductile iron ...

Duplex aluminized coatings [PDF]

open access: yes, 1975
The surface of a metallic base system is initially coated with a metallic alloy layer that is ductile and oxidation resistant. An aluminide coating is then applied to the metallic alloy layer.

A first-principles investigation on the effects of magnetism on the Bain transformation of $\alpha$-phase FeNi systems

open access: yes, 2012
The effects of magnetism on the Bain transformation of $\alpha$-phase FeNi systems are investigated by using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA).

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Heat Treatment of S.G Cast Iron [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
S.G Cast iron is defined as a high carbon containing, iron based alloy in which the graphite is present in compact, spherical shapes rather than in the shape of flakes, the latter being typical of gray cast iron .

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

An Investigation into the Railway Shoulder Manufacturing

open access: yesJournal of Engineering and Sustainable Development, 2009
Ductile cast iron is considered to be a recent member of the cast iron family. Because of the high cost spent in producing ferritic ductile iron using heat treatment for a long period of time.
