Denne mastergradsavhandlingen fikk sitt opphav gjennom en kronikk skrevet av førsteamanuensis i urfolksstudier Torjer A. Olsen. Overskriften «Samane er blitt ‘dei andre’ i ein norsk samanheng. Skulen har gjort sitt for at det er blitt slik. No skal skulen gjere sitt for at samane ikkje lenger er dei andre» (Olsen, 2018) fanget min oppmerksomhet.
