Assimilating spaceborne lidar dust extinction can improve dust forecasts [PDF]
Atmospheric mineral dust has a rich tri-dimensional spatial and temporal structure that is poorly constrained in forecasts and analyses when only column-integrated aerosol optical depth (AOD) is assimilated.

Dust properties along anomalous extinction sightlines [PDF]
The large majority of extinction sight lines in our Galaxy obey a simple relation depending on one parameter, the total-to-selective extinction coefficient, Rv. Different values of Rv are able to match the whole extinction curve through different environments so characterizing normal extinction curves.

Evolution of Dust Extinction and Supernova Cosmology [PDF]
We have made a quantitative calculation for the systematic evolution of average extinction by interstellar dust in host galaxies of high-redshift Type Ia supernovae, by using a realistic model of photometric and chemical evolution of galaxies and supernova rate histories in various galaxy types.

Optimizing CALIPSO Saharan dust retrievals [PDF]
We demonstrate improvements in CALIPSO (Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations) dust extinction retrievals over northern Africa and Europe when corrections are applied regarding the Saharan dust lidar ratio assumption, the ...

Dust extinction is one of the fundamental measurements of dust grain sizes, compositions, and shapes. Most of the wavelength-dependent variations seen in Milky Way extinction are strongly correlated with the single parameter R ( V ) = A ( V )/ E ( B − V )

EARLINET dust observations vs. BSC-DREAM8b modeled profiles: 12-year-long systematic comparison at Potenza, Italy [PDF]
In this paper, we report the first systematic comparison of 12-year modeled dust extinction profiles vs. Raman lidar measurements. We use the BSC-DREAM8b model, one of the most widely used dust regional models in the Mediterranean, and Potenza EARLINET ...

Circumstellar Dust and Circumstellar Extinction Curves [PDF]
We have calculated the circumstellar extinction curves produced by dust grains which absorb and scatter the stellar radiation in the shells of pre-main-sequence stars. A Monte Carlo method was used to model the radiative transfer in non-spherical shells. The dependence on the particle size distribution and the dust shell parameters has been examined.

EXPLORING DUST EXTINCTION AT THE EDGE OF REIONIZATION [PDF]
The brightness of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows and their occurrence in young, blue galaxies make them excellent probes to study star forming regions in the distant Universe. We here elucidate dust extinction properties in the early Universe through the analysis of the afterglows of all known z > 6 GRBs: GRB 090423, 080913 and 050904, at z = 8.2,
