On the Origins of Extreme Velocity Stars as Revealed by Large-scale Galactic Surveys

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2023
We assemble a large sample of 12,784 high-velocity stars with total velocity V _GSR ≥ 300 km s ^−1 , selected from RAVE DR5, SDSS DR12, LAMOST DR8, APOGEE DR16, GALAH DR2, and Gaia EDR3.

An Observational Limit on the Dwarf Galaxy Population of the Local Group [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We present the results of an all-sky, deep optical survey for faint Local Group dwarf galaxies. Candidate objects were selected from the second Palomar survey (POSS-II) and ESO/SRC survey plates and follow-up observations performed to determine whether ...

Warm Dark Matter Sterile Neutrinos in Electron Capture and Beta Decay Spectra

open access: yesAdvances in High Energy Physics, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
We briefly review the motivation to search for sterile neutrinos in the keV mass scale, as dark matter candidates, and the prospects to find them in beta decay or electron capture spectra, with a global perspective. We describe the fundamentals of the neutrino flavor‐mass eigenstate mismatch that opens the possibility of detecting sterile neutrinos in ...

UGC 7639: A Dwarf Galaxy in the Canes Venatici I Cloud

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
We want to get insight into the formation mechanism and the evolution of UGC 7639, a dwarf galaxy in the Canes Venatici I Cloud (CVnIC). We used archival multiwavelength data to constrain its global properties. Ultraviolet images show that UGC 7639 inner regions are composed mostly by young stellar populations.

Deep photometry of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 1986
We report the results of deep CCD photometry of two overlapping fields in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find (B-V)o,g = m0.69, indicating a mean [Fe/H] = −2.0. The width of the giant branch below the horizontal branch is somewhat wider than our observational errors permit, from which we infer there is a spread in metallicities amongst the Draco

The Tucana dwarf spheroidal galaxy: not such a massive failure after all [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2020
Context. Isolated local group (LG) dwarf galaxies have evolved most or all of their life unaffected by interactions with the large LG spirals and therefore offer the opportunity to learn about the intrinsic characteristics of this class of objects. Aims.

Chemical and Photometric Evolution Models for Disk, Irregular, and Low Mass Galaxies

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
We summarize the updated set of multiphase chemical evolution models performed with 44 theoretical radial mass initial distributions and 10 possible values of efficiencies to form molecular clouds and stars. We present the results about the infall rate histories, the formation of the disk, and the evolution of the radial distributions of diffuse and ...

A Chemical Evolution Model for the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2016
Fornax is the brightest Milky Way (MW) dwarf spheroidal galaxy and its star formation history (SFH) has been derived from observations. We estimate the time evolution of its gas mass and net inflow and outflow rates from the SFH usinga simple star ...

Young Globular Clusters and Dwarf Spheroidals [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Most of the globular clusters in the main body of the Galactic halo were formed almost simultaneously. However, globular cluster formation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies appears to have extended over a significant fraction of a Hubble time.

THE CHEMICAL EVOLUTION OF THE DRACO DWARF SPHEROIDAL GALAXY [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2009
We present an abundance analysis based on high resolution spectra of 8 stars selected to span the full range in metallicity in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find [Fe/H] for the sample stars ranges from -1.5 to -3.0 dex. Combining our sample with previously published work for a total of 14 luminous Draco giants, we show that the abundance ratios
