Dynamic mooring-forces allocation in dynamic ship positioning
Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 1989The design of a dynamic positioning system for a multiply-moored vessel with active winches and thrusters is presented. The proposed positioning system is based on Kalman filter and linear optimal control. Its peculiarity is that it contains a scheme which allocates dynamically the control forces between moorings and thrusters.

Force dynamics is an approach to knowledge representation that aims to describe how notions of force, resistance, and tendency enter into the representation of certain kinds of words and concepts. As a theory of causation, it specifies how the concept of cause may be grounded in people’s representations of force and spatial relations.

Abstract We examine an experimental apparatus that is used to motivate the connections between the basic properties of vectors, potential functions, systems of nonlinear equations, and Newton's method for nonlinear systems of equations. The apparatus is an adaptation of a force table where we remove the center-pin and allow the center-ring to move ...

Forcing Function Diagnostics for Nonlinear Dynamics
Biometrics, 2009Summary This article investigates the problem of model diagnostics for systems described by nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). I propose modeling lack of fit as a time‐varying correction to the right‐hand side of a proposed differential equation.

Dynamics of forced autoionization
Physical Review A, 1999In this Rapid Communication we report on the autoionization dynamics of the $5d7d$ doubly excited state in barium in a static electric field. The different experiments and theory show Stark beatings in the autoionization process. Also it appears that the total spin of the two valence electrons plays a major role in the ionization dynamics.

Labor Force Dynamics of Older Men
Econometrica, 1994"This paper describes and analyzes movements of older men among labor force states [in the United States] using quarterly observations derived from the Retirement History Survey (RHS)." The results indicate "substantial undercounts in the biannual data, indicating that the prevalence of labor force movements at older ages has been underestimated ...

Weak-noncovalent interactions govern structural cohesion and mediate most of life’s functions from the outer membrane surface to the interior nucleus of a cell. On laboratory time scales, the energy landscape of a weak bond is fully explored by Brownian-thermal excitations, and energy barriers along its dissociation pathway(s) become encoded in a rate ...

Configurational forces in dynamics and electrodynamics
2007Summary: The notion of configurational force in mechanics and thermomechanics can be readily extended to electromagnetic elastic materials. By invariance arguments and through variational procedures, the Maxwell equations are transformed into a Lagrangian (or material) form and thus consistently coupled with the mechanical balance laws. In this context,
