Ground-based measurements of ionospheric dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate, 2018
Different methods are used to research and monitor the ionospheric dynamics using ground measurements: Digisonde Drift Measurements (DDM) and Continuous Doppler Sounding (CDS). For the first time, we present comparison between both methods on specific examples. Both methods provide information about the vertical drift velocity component.

Cassini detection of Enceladus' cold water-group plume ionosphere [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This study reports direct detection by the Cassini plasma spectrometer of freshly-produced water-group ions (O+, OH+, H2O+, H3O+) and heavier water dimer ions (HxO(2))(+) very close to Enceladus where the plasma begins to emerge from the plume.

Chorus Element Repetition: Roles of Energetic Electron Injection and Nonlinear Wave Growth

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract Chorus waves are coherent whistler‐mode emissions in Earth’s magnetosphere and play a key role in the acceleration and loss of radiation belt electrons. Their spectra commonly consist of discrete and repetitive elements, yet the mechanism governing this repetition is not fully understood.

Joint Analysis and Morphological Characterization of HFSWR Echo Properties during Severe Typhoon Muifa

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Investigating the dynamic evolution process of the ocean and ionosphere in sudden sea conditions poses a challenging problem. To address this objective, this study utilizes actual data from high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) to analyze, validate ...

Aseismic Slip Along the Evaporite‐Rich Strike‐Slip Katouna‐Stamna Fault in Greece

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract Aseismic slip has been observed on many active faults globally, but its controlling mechanisms remain unclear. This study focuses on the NW‐striking, left‐lateral Katouna‐Stamna Fault in Western Greece. We use InSAR surface deformation measurements to confirm the presence of aseismic slip and compare this behavior with structural evidence from

Substorm Effects on Chorus Emissions Modulated by ULF Waves

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Although cross‐scale wave‐particle interactions play a critical role in energy transfer in the magnetosphere, the influence of geomagnetic activity on the physical mechanisms involved remains unclear. In this study, we investigate this question by analyzing Van Allen Probes‐A observations of an event occurring on 25 July 2016.

Impacts of Mid‐Latitude Ionospheric Dynamics on RF Applications During the November 2025 Superstorm Event

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract This study demonstrates the intriguing and complex interplay among auroral precipitation, enhanced TEC, density irregularities, and amplitude scintillations observed during the November 2025 superstorm. For the first time, we present observations of strong amplitude scintillation across continental United States (CONUS)—nearly from coast to ...

Radio tomographic imaging of the northern high-latitude ionosphere on a wide geographic scale [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Several chains of receivers, measuring total electron content (TEC) during passes of satellites in the U.S. Navy Ionospheric Measuring System (NIMS), are operated at northern high latitudes by members of the International Ionospheric Tomography Community

Shining light on the aurora's contributions to people: A qualitative study of the aurora borealis in Greenland

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 9, Page 3122-3144, September 2026.
Abstract The aurora borealis (northern lights) is an abiotic natural phenomenon that contributes to human well‐being. There is currently a significant research gap in primary qualitative valuation of the aurora's links to people. This exploratory qualitative study applies the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES ...

Method to locate the polar cap boundary in the nightside ionosphere and application to a substorm event [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
International audienceIn this paper we describe a new method to be used for the polar cap boundary (PCB) determination in the nightside ionosphere by using the EISCAT Svalbard radar (ESR) field-aligned measurements by the 42-m antenna and southward ...
