Infrared Thermography for Early Identification and Treatment of Shoulder Sores to Improve Sow and Piglet Welfare

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
Shoulder sores in sows cause pain, may lead to early weaning and resultant piglet distress, and premature culling. Early detection and intervention is key to avoid these substantial production and welfare imposts.

The eagle is landing [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of General Practice, 2012
As a GP in Edinburgh, I read with great interest the article ‘The eagle is landing,’ in your September 2012 issue.1 Some 12 years ago, I was diagnosed with glossopharyngeal neuralgia, secondary to Eagle syndrome. The saga started quite simply during a family holiday, with a discharging ear infection treated with ciprofloxacin.

Maximum Entropy Approach to Massive Graph Spectrum Learning with Applications

open access: yesAlgorithms, 2022
We propose an alternative maximum entropy approach to learning the spectra of massive graphs. In contrast to state-of-the-art Lanczos algorithm for spectral density estimation and applications thereof, our approach does not require kernel smoothing.

Species-typical group size differentially influences social reward neural circuitry during nonreproductive social interactions

open access: yesiScience, 2022
Summary: We investigated whether nonreproductive social interactions may be rewarding for colonial but not non-colonial species. We found that the colonial spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) is significantly more gregarious, more prosocial, and less ...

Stockperson attitudes towards Maternity Rings and farrowing crates

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
Societal attitudes suggest low support for confinement housing in livestock farming, such as the farrowing crate. The attitudes of stockpersons working in these systems are yet to be understood but should be prioritised as their human-animal interactions

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Distribution of genetic variation underlying adult migration timing in steelhead of the Columbia River basin

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Fish migrations are energetically costly, especially when moving between freshwater and saltwater, but are a viable strategy for Pacific salmon and trout (Oncorhynchus spp.) due to the advantageous resources available at various life stages.
