Accurate Pulmonary Nodule Detection in Computed Tomography Images Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yes, 2017
Early detection of pulmonary cancer is the most promising way to enhance a patient's chance for survival. Accurate pulmonary nodule detection in computed tomography (CT) images is a crucial step in diagnosing pulmonary cancer.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Multiplex imaging of localized prostate tumors reveals altered spatial organization of AR-positive cells in the microenvironment

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Mapping the spatial interactions of cancer, immune, and stromal cell states presents novel opportunities for patient stratification and for advancing immunotherapy.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Interval breast cancer: radiological surveillance in screening Egyptian population

open access: yesThe Egyptian Journal of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine
Background Interval cancers might be divided into true negative interval cancer where a new lesion is detected that no sign of disease could be detected on previous screening mammogram. For false-negative interval cancers, those missed for overt symptoms

Nicotinamide N‐methyltransferase promotes drug resistance in lung cancer, as revealed by nascent proteomic profiling

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
AZD9291 has shown promise in targeted cancer therapy but is limited by resistance. In this study, we employed metabolic labeling and LC–MS/MS to profile time‐resolved nascent protein perturbations, allowing dynamic tracking of drug‐responsive proteins. We demonstrated that increased NNMT expression is associated with drug resistance, highlighting NNMT ...

PARP inhibitors elicit distinct transcriptional programs in homologous recombination competent castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PARP inhibitors are used to treat a small subset of prostate cancer patients. These studies reveal that PARP1 activity and expression are different between European American and African American prostate cancer tissue samples. Additionally, different PARP inhibitors cause unique and overlapping transcriptional changes, notably, p53 pathway upregulation.

Single stage direct -to- implant breast reconstruction following mastectomy (The use of Ultrapro® Mesh)

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgical Oncology
Background Immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) with direct to implant (DTI) is the preferred method of reconstruction by many surgeons and patients, however, acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and other synthetic meshes are expensive especially in low- and ...

EPIC Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Cancer Research, 2016
Abstract CA125 dominated performance for ovarian cancer early detection among four serum biomarkers evaluated in EPIC study prediagnostic serum, rising on average 3 years prior to detection. Adding HE4 provided only marginal improvement.
