A Terrestrial Planet in a ~1 AU Orbit Around One Member of a ~15 AU Binary

open access: yes, 2014
We detect a cold, terrestrial planet in a binary-star system using gravitational microlensing. The planet has low mass (2 Earth masses) and lies projected at $a_{\perp,ph}$ ~ 0.8 astronomical units (AU) from its host star, similar to the Earth-Sun ...

The HARPS search for southern extra-solar planets XXXII. Only 4 planets in the Gl~581 system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Gl 581 planetary system has generated wide interest, because its 4 planets include both the lowest mass planet known around a main sequence star other than the Sun and the first super-Earth planet in the habitable zone of its star.

Observations of Extrasolar Planets Enabled by a Return to the Moon [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2007
Ambitious studies of Earth-like extrasolar planets are outlined in the context of an exploration initiative for a return to the Earth's Moon. Two mechanism for linearly polarizing light reflected from Earth-like planets are discussed: 1) Rayleigh-scattering from a planet's clear atmosphere, and 2) specular reflection from a planet's ocean.

Transit least-squares survey -- II. Discovery and validation of 17 new sub- to super-Earth-sized planets in multi-planet systems from K2

open access: yes, 2019
The extended Kepler mission (K2) has revealed more than 500 transiting planets in roughly 500,000 stellar light curves. All of these were found either with the box least-squares algorithm or by visual inspection. Here we use our new transit least-squares

A unifying principle for global greenness patterns and trends

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Vegetation cover regulates the exchanges of energy, water and carbon between land and atmosphere. Remotely-sensed fractional absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fAPAR), a land-surface greenness measure, depends on carbon allocation to foliage ...

A near-earth optical communications terminal with a corevolving planetary sun shield [PDF]

open access: yes
The umbra of a planet may serve as a sun shield for a space based optical communications terminal or for a space based astronomical observatory. An orbit that keeps the terminal or observatory within the umbra is desirable.

The contribution of secondary eclipses as astrophysical false positives to exoplanet transit surveys

open access: yes, 2013
We investigate in this paper the astrophysical false-positive configuration in exoplanet-transit surveys that involves eclipsing binaries and giant planets which present only a secondary eclipse, as seen from the Earth.

Reflections on the past and future of whole Earth system science

open access: yesGlobal Sustainability
Non-technical Summary With unabating climate extremes, evidence of waning biosphere buffering capacity, and surging ocean surface temperature, Earth system analysts are posing the question: is global environmental change accelerating, driven by the ...
