Microbiological guideline values for recreational bathing in Canada: Time for change? [PDF]

open access: yesCan J Infect Dis Med Microbiol, 2007
Recreational bathing is an activity practiced by thousands of Canadians every year. While its health benefits are numerous, bathing in polluted water can also be a source of health problems. These problems are generally nonspecific and are difficult to detect through usual health monitoring systems.

Evaluation of new pivoting linear‐move precision irrigation machine

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, Volume 72, Issue 4, Page 922-933, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Due to population growth, freshwater resources around the world are becoming increasingly scarce, and the water supply in agriculture has emerged as one of the limitations of food production. Variable‐rate irrigation (VRI), a type of precision irrigation, allows water‐efficient irrigation techniques to ensure an optimal water supply.

Relative importance of exotic species traits in determining invasiveness across levels of establishment: Example of freshwater fish

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 37, Issue 9, Page 2358-2370, September 2023., 2023
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Understanding the factors responsible for the success of exotic species is a prevalent issue in invasion biology. Although the ecological traits of exotic species are known to play a major role, it is still unknown which traits are responsible for the different ...

Muddy waters: Mega‐herbivores as agents of change in African shallow freshwaters

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 3, Page 722-725, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Large herbivores have been described as agents of change in terrestrial habitats. Their effect on aquatic ecosystems are, however, underexplored. We raise the question of whether elephants and hippopotamus have the potential to significantly alter limnological properties and, indirectly, primary and secondary productivity within small and ...

Floral composition and diversity of the lagos coastal environment, South‐Western, Nigeria

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 1, Page 37-47, March 2023., 2023
Abstract The present study investigates the floral diversity of the Lagos coastal environments by sampling 21 points using the quadrat method. The study revealed two major aquatic ecosystem types (mangrove and freshwater swamp) and recorded 125 species belonging to 108 genera and 49 families.

Water reuse to free up freshwater for higher‐value use and increase climate resilience and water productivity

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, Volume 71, Issue S1, Page 100-109, October 2022., 2022
Abstract The impact of climate change on the availability of water affects all types of land use and sectors. This complexity calls for integrated water resources management and negotiations between sectors on the most important, cost‐effective, and productive allocation of water where it is a limited resource.

Viewpoint: Irrigation water management in a space age

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, Volume 71, Issue S1, Page 39-50, October 2022., 2022
Abstract Climate change and rapid population growth are already putting increasing demand and pressure on the world's freshwater resources. Irrigated agriculture is responsible for about 70% of global freshwater withdrawals, consuming the most amount of water.

Bridging Indigenous and Western sciences in freshwater research, monitoring, and management in Canada

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 2, Issue 3, July–September 2021., 2021
This systematic map, which includes 74 published case studies, highlights the diversity of ways knowledge systems can be woven. Furthermore, our findings point to a potential emerging transformation in research focused on freshwater ecosystems, habitats, and species to a practice that elevates the role of Indigenous communities, centers Indigenous ...

Influence du maintien en mer des mâles de saumon atlantique (Salmo salar), pendant la période de reproduction, sur la qualité du sperme

open access: yesKnowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems, 1998
