Conversion of α-Ecdysone to β-Ecdysone by Crustaceans and Insects

Nature, 1969
SINCE Karlson1 isolated α-ecdysone from silkworm pupae, other workers have isolated and identified three more ecdysones—β-ecdysone (crustecdysone)2, 26-hydroxy-β-ecdysone3 and 2-deoxy-β-ecdysone4—in extracts of insects and crustaceans. Additional types of ecdysones will probably be described when other species of arthropods are closely examined, as ...

Ecdysone metabolism: Ecdysone dehydrogenase‐isomerase

Lipids, 1974
AbstractAn enzyme system that converts α‐ecdysone to its hormonally less active 3α‐epimer was detected only in the midgut of the tobacco hornworm,Manduca sexta (L.). This system appears to be specific for the ecdysones and may represent a metabolic control point for regulating molting hormone activity.

The conserved microRNA miR‐8‐3p coordinates the expression of V‐ATPase subunits to regulate ecdysone biosynthesis for Drosophila metamorphosis

The FASEB Journal, 2020
The steroid hormone ecdysone is the central regulator of insect metamorphosis, during which a growing, immature larva is remodeled, through pupal stages, to a reproductive adult.

An update on ecdysone signaling during insect oogenesis.

Current Opinion in Insect Science, 2019
An overview is presented of the different functions of ecdysone signaling during insect oogenesis. An extensive genetic toolkit allowed analysis with unprecedented temporal and spatial detail in Drosophila where functions were revealed in stem cell ...

Biosynthesis of ecdysone and ecdysone phosphates in spinach

Phytochemistry, 1994
Abstract The polar ecdysteroid conjugate, ecdysone phosphate (2β,3β,14α,22R,25-pentahydroxy-7-en-6-one-3- phosphate) was identified in excised first leaves of spinach, where it is endogenously produced during 20- hydroxyecdysone biosynthesis. Radiolabelled [14C]ecdysone phosphate was isolated from several excised leaf assays and was hydrolysed with ...

The crustacean ecdysone cassette: A gatekeeper for molt and metamorphosis.

Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2019
Arthropods have long been utilized as models to explore molecular function, and the findings derived from them can be applied throughout metazoa, including as a basis for medical research. This has led to the adoption of many representative insect models

Nonsteroidal Ecdysone Agonists

2005
Nonsteroidal ecdysone agonists are novel compounds that have become attractive candidates not only as pest control agents in agriculture but also as tools for research. Their narrow spectrum of activity makes them relatively safe as pesticides, and their mode of action as ligands for gene expression has found application in gene therapy and inducing ...

Ecdysone Oxidase in Insects

Hoppe-Seyler´s Zeitschrift für physiologische Chemie, 1978
The occurrence of the enzyme ecdysone oxidase was demonstrated in several insect species. In blowflies it was detected mainly in eggs and pupae. The enzyme activity in blowflies varies during development parallel to the ecdysteroid content. This suggests a specific but presently unknown function of the enzyme. Ecdysone oxidase was located mainly in the

On ecdysone-binding proteins and ecdysone-like material in nematodes

International Journal for Parasitology, 1977
Abstract Homogenates of Panagrellus redivivus and extracts of P. redivivus, Aphelenchus avenae and Haemonchus contortus were examined for ecdysone-binding proteins and ecdysone-like material, respectively. Sucrose density-gradient centrifugation, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and charcoal-dextran-binding assay failed to detect ecdysone ...
