Reaction of an insect cell line to ecdysterone

Ecdysterone applied above the 0.1 μg/ml level to Grace's Antheraea eucalypti Scott [Austrocaligula eucalypti (Scott)] cell line increased cell volume, cell motion, the breakdown of thymidine, and the uptake and breakdown of uridine and decreased the rate of growth of the cell population and the uptake of thymidine.

Organ cultures of hindgut from diapausing tobacco hornworm pupae, Manduca sexta (Johannson), produce an abundance of migrant cells around the original explant. With time-lapse cinematography, these cells were seen to move slowly and tended to aggregate.

Cockroach Leg Regeneration: Effects of Ecdysterone in vitro

Science, 1970
Regenerating epithelial tissue from the cockroach leg forms two cuticular coverings. The first of these consists of a protein-carbohydrate complex that is replaced before molting. The second covering represents the cuticle containing chitin. The deposition of the cuticle can be induced in vitro by adding ecdysterone to the culture medium.

Ecdysterone biosynthesis in Podocarpus elata

Abstract The insect molting hormone ecdysterone was isolated in radioactive form after administration of cholesterol-4- 14 C to Podocarpus elata seedlings. Cholestenone-4- 14 C, however, was not significantly incorporated into ecdysterone by this plant. The biosynthetic implications of these results are discussed.

Effects of ecdysterone in polytene chromosomes of Trichosia pubescens

Injection of ecdysterone into mid-fourth instar larvae of Trichosia pubescens brought about drastic changes in the puffing pattern of the chromosomes of the salivary gland. The puff sequence induced by the hormone is quite similar to that which normally occurs at the end of larval life.
