Structural and Compositional Disturbance Legacies Mediate the Resistance of European Forests to Repeated Disturbances

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 34, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Climate change is altering forest disturbance regimes across Europe. Structural and species diversity are generally thought to enhance disturbance resistance. However, how disturbances affect stand structure and tree species diversity remains untested across broad spatial gradients and for multiple disturbance agents.

Unveiling emerging interdisciplinary research challenges in the highly threatened sclerophyllous forests of central Chile

open access: yesRevista Chilena de Historia Natural
Background The potential ecosystem collapse of forests in Mediterranean-type ecosystems (MTEs) by unprecedented droughts is worrisome due to the impacts on its exceptional biodiversity and human well-being.

Trade‐offs among restored ecosystem functions are context‐dependent in Mediterranean‐type regions

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2025, Issue 8, August 2025.
Global biodiversity hotspots, including Mediterranean‐type ecosystems worldwide, are highly threatened by global change that alters biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and services. Some restoration activities enhance ecosystem functions by reintroducing plant species based on known relationships between plant traits and ecosystem processes.

Above‐ground competition by Nephrolepis brownii inhibits tree seedling recruitment in a tropical restoration experiment

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 8, Page 1968-1979, August 2025.
As Nephrolepis brownii primarily interferes through above‐ground competition, management of above‐ground tissues may mitigate its impact. However, additional research on the efficacy of this management strategy and potential allelopathic traits is needed.

Towards a process of translational palaeoecology: A practical guide to research co‐production

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 3, July–September 2025.
Palaeoecology has the potential to support conservation practice, but greater collaboration between academics, practitioners and policymakers is needed. Here, we share the findings of a workshop where academics undertaking palaeoenvironmental research and conservation practitioners shared their experiences with research–practice collaboration.

The Rapid Recovery of a Caatinga Dry Forest is Mediated by Disturbance‐Adapted Species

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 4, July 2025.
Overall, regenerating and old‐growth forest stands exhibited similar plant diversity across all ontogenetic stages, with a negligible role played by forest stand age, precipitation, and chronic human disturbance. Species exclusively recorded as adults or seeds were mostly dispersed by animals, indicating that several species fail in either dispersing ...

Evaluating Socio-Ecological Interactions for the Management of Protected Urban Green Spaces

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2019
Protected urban green spaces (PUGS) are exposed to numerous disturbances and threats since they are immersed in highly dynamic socio-ecological systems. PUGS in highly urbanized cities require particular conservation strategies.
