Mosquito Vector Ecology in Swamp Ecosystems

open access: yesRiver Studies
This study investigates the ecological dynamics of mosquito vectors in the swamp ecosystems of Desa Kebun Raya, Kecamatan Kintap, Kabupaten Tanah Laut, Kalimantan Selatan. An entomological survey was conducted to assess species composition, abundance, and larval indices in relation to the unique swamp habitat.

Comparative and functional anatomy of masticatory muscles and bite force in opossums (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
We describe the functional anatomy of masticatory muscles in nine opossums, finding a generalized anatomical pattern with differences related to skull morphology. Variation in quantitative myological data and estimated bite force was mostly related to size, and the increase in bite force supports dietary diversification associated with size increase ...

Tolerance to air exposure of the New Zealand mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Hydrobiidae, Mollusca) as a prerequisite to survival in overland translocations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Spreading throughout a new ecosystem is the last step of an exotic species to become invasive. In the case of invasive aquatic molluscs, tolerance to air exposure is one of the main mechanisms allowing overland translocation and spreading.

Functional models from limited data: A parametric and multimodal approach to anatomy and 3D kinematics of feeding in basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Basking sharks, Cetorhinus maximus (Gunnerus, Brugden [Squalus maximus], Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskabs Skrifter, 1765, vol. 3, pp. 33–49), feed by gaping their mouths and gill slits, greatly reorienting their cranial skeletons to filter food from water.

Studies on mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and anthropic environment: 7- Behaviour of adults Nyssorhynchus anophelines with special reference to Anopheles albitarsis s.l. in South-Eastern Brazil

open access: yesRevista de Saúde Pública
Results obtained with catches performed at several sites of the Ribeira Valley, SP (Brazil) are reported. Collections with Shannon type traps showed a concentration of An.albitarsis s.l.

Revisiting paravertebral muscles in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) (Leporidae; Lagomorpha)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well‐studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species ...

Are there morpho‐acoustic patterns of adaptation in nonhuman primate ears? Testing the role of ecology and habitat in shaping ear morphology and function

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Analysis of the variation in the bony structures of the inner and middle ear provides critical insights into functional morphology, as well as adaptive morphology across primates. In this study, we investigated whether ear morphology patterns are related to the ecological characteristics of species and their habitats to test two acoustic ...
