The dental plate on bichir pectoral fins: A unique dermal skeletal element bearing individual odontodes with tooth‐like replacement

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 249, Issue 1, Page 127-140, July 2026.
Pectoral fins of bichirs encompass the so‐called dental plates – unique dermal skeletal elements with individual odontodes identical to the oral teeth. Abstract The dermal skeleton appeared early in vertebrate evolution in the form of mineralized skin denticles composed of tooth‐like units—odontodes.

Differential distribution of competence for panplacodal and neural crest induction to non-neural and neural ectoderm

open access: yes, 2018
It is still controversial whether cranial placodes and neural crest cells arise from a common precursor at the neural plate border or whether placodes arise from non-neural ectoderm and neural crest from neural ectoderm.

Is the temporomandibular joint affected by rheumatoid arthritis? A comparative investigation with knee arthritis in an experimental rat model

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 249, Issue 1, Page 114-126, July 2026.
Animals were sensitized with mBSA emulsified in CFA/IFA and subsequently received three intra‐articular injections of mBSA into either the TMJ or the knee (once per week). Mechanical hyperalgesia was assessed using electronic von Frey testing after arthritis establishment at 24 h or 7 days following the third intra‐articular injection.

Dental Implants in Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: A Multicenter Retrospective Study. Part 1: Implant Outcomes

open access: yesJournal of Oral Rehabilitation, Volume 53, Issue 7, Page 1259-1274, July 2026.
This multicenter retrospective study evaluated implant survival and peri‐implant health in adults with non‐syndromic intellectual disability. Among 453 implants with long‐term follow‐up, survival exceeded 92%, with tissue‐level implants and cement‐retained restorations associated with healthier peri‐implant conditions. These findings support the use of

Ectoderm to mesoderm transition by downregulation of actomyosin contractility

open access: yes, 2019
Collective migration of cohesive tissues is a fundamental process in morphogenesis, and is particularly well illustrated during gastrulation by the rapid and massive internalization of the mesoderm, which contrasts with the much more modest movements of ...

Retinoic Acid Informs the Positional Identity of Frontonasal Neural Crest Cells Through Alx Family of Transcription Factors

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 40, Issue 12, 30 June 2026.
Retinoic acid (RA) regulates the positional identity of cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) through the transcription factors Alx1 and Alx4. Upon receiving RA from the local environment, liganded RAR/RXR heterodimers activate the expression of Alx1 and Alx4, which promote the frontonasal identity of CNCCs and inhibit the first pharyngeal arch identity ...
