Chinese Pangolin Changes Local Vertebrate Assemblages and Contributes to Their Interspecific Interactions by Burrowing and Revisitation

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
In this study, we systematically analyzed the utilization patterns of Chinese pangolin burrows by sympatric species in Guangdong Province, China, including differences in species composition using burrow mounds and burrow tunnels. We found that repeated visits to burrows by Chinese pangolin promoted the use of burrows by sympatric species, suggesting ...

Estimating pathogen‐spillover risk using host–ectoparasite interactions

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Pathogen spillover corresponds to the transmission of a pathogen or parasite from an original host species to a novel host species, preluding disease emergence.

Effects of Vector Density on Blood Parasite Spread and Health Consequences for Avian Hosts: An Experimental Epidemiology Blueprint

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
In an experimental epidemiology setup, groups of pigeons were exposed to different numbers of infective malaria vectors. Vector number explained the speed of transmission, the final prevalence, and changes in host behavior. ABSTRACT Vector density plays a critical role in the transmission dynamics of vector‐borne diseases and thus in their health and ...

Topical cream with essential oils, zinc and salicylic acid reduces pruritus and skin lesion scores in pruritic dogs

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Objectives To assess the efficacy of an essential oil, salicylic acid and zinc‐based cream in the relief of pruritus not secondary to infectious pyoderma or ectoparasites and associated dermatological lesions. Methods Forty‐one client‐owned, otherwise healthy, dogs with chronic, noninfectious pruritus were enrolled in a double‐blinded, placebo ...

Evaluation of efficacy of a drug based on fipronil, ivermectin, and pyriproxyfen against ecto- and endoparasitic invasions of dogs and cats

open access: yesRegulatory Mechanisms in Biosystems
Ecto- and endoparasitic invasions of dogs and cats are treated using drugs based on fipronil, ivermectin, and pyriproxyfen. That is why our objective was performing a field study to measure the efficacy of a complex drug with different mechanisms of the ...

Diversity, Transmission, and Cophylogeny of Ledanteviruses (Rhabdoviridae: Ledantevirus) and Nycteribiid Bat Flies Parasitizing Angolan Soft-Furred Fruit Bats in Bundibugyo District, Uganda

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
Obligate hematophagous ectoparasitic flies of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea are distributed worldwide, but their role as vectors and reservoirs of viruses remains understudied.

Comparative study of blood biochemistry in clinically healthy farmed barramundi (Lates calcarifer) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from freshwater recirculating aquaculture systems

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is an economically significant aquaculture species and ranks among Australia's top five farmed finfish. As global production intensifies, understanding the physiology and health of barramundi is essential to support animal welfare and industry profitability.

Shedding light on the parasite communities and diet of the deep‐sea shark Deania profundorum (Smith & Radcliffe, 1912) (Squaliform: Centrophoridae) from the Avilés Canyon (southern Bay of Biscay)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Deep‐sea elasmobranchs are less resilient to the increasing scale of anthropogenic impacts such as fisheries, owing to their life‐history traits. The necessity for proper management measures is hampered by the scant knowledge on these taxa and their biology. Here we provide the first comprehensive insight into the parasite infracommunities and

Ectoparasite Prevalences of Grouper Fish (Epinephelus fuscogutatus x Epinephelus polyphekadion) Cultured in Floating Net Cages

open access: yesIlmu Kelautan, 2020
Monitoring the health of the reared fish in a floating net cage (FNC) is often conducted by examining their ectoparasites. This study determines ectoparasite prevalences of grouper fish (Epinephelus fuscogutatus x E. polyphekadion).

First record of young‐of‐the‐year smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) in coastal waters of Galicia, northwest Spain

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) is typically considered an oceanic species and is only rarely observed in the cooler coastal waters of the northeastern Atlantic. On 20 December 2024, a juvenile S. zyganea was captured at 25 m depth in the inner Ría de Pontevedra (Rías Baixas, northwest Spain).
