Nuclear medicine: investigation of renal function in small animal medicine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Kidney function investigations in veterinary medicine are traditionally based on blood analysis (blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine concentration) and / or urinalysis (urine specific gravity, protein-to-creatinine ratio or fractional ...

A Perspective of Coagulation Dysfunction in Multiple Sclerosis and in Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A key role of both coagulation and vascular thrombosis has been reported since the first descriptions of multiple sclerosis (MS). Subsequently, the observation of a close concordance between perivascular fibrin(ogen) deposition and the occurrence of ...

Cell‐Type Specific Circuits in the Mammillary Body for Place and Object Recognition Memory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 13, April 3, 2025.
Li et al. defined two novel glutamatergic neuronal subtypes in the medial mammillary nucleus, pars lateralis‐located parvalbumin (PV) neurons, and basalis‐located Drd2 neurons. PV and Drd2 neurons differ in their electrophysiological properties encoded by Kcnn4 and Cacna1h, and selectively modulate place and object recognition memory by two distinct ...

Chelation: Harnessing and Enhancing Heavy Metal Detoxification—A Review

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
Toxic metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are ubiquitous, have no beneficial role in human homeostasis, and contribute to noncommunicable chronic diseases. While novel drug targets for chronic disease are eagerly sought, potentially helpful agents that aid in detoxification of toxic elements, chelators, have largely been restricted to ...

Neurofilament light protein in blood as a potential biomarker of neurodegeneration in Huntington's disease: a retrospective cohort analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
BACKGROUND: Blood biomarkers of neuronal damage could facilitate clinical management of and therapeutic development for Huntington's disease. We investigated whether neurofilament light protein NfL (also known as NF-L) in blood is a potential ...

Paramagnetic salt and agarose recipes for phantoms with desired T1 and T2 values for low‐field MRI

open access: yesNMR in Biomedicine, Volume 38, Issue 1, January 2025.
Recipes that use agarose mixed with one of four paramagnetic salts are developed (NiCl2 shown here), which can be used to create synthetic samples for field strengths below 0.55 T. The recipes' utility is demonstrated by targeting relaxation properties of five neurological tissues for fields ranging between 0.0065 and 0.55 T.

Levels of Key Enzymes of Methionine‐Homocysteine Metabolism in Preeclampsia

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
Objective. To evaluate the role of key enzymes in the methionine‐homocysteine metabolism (MHM) in the physiopathology of preeclampsia (PE). Methods. Plasma and placenta from pregnant women (32 controls and 16 PE patients) were analyzed after informed consent. Protein was quantified by western blot.

Phytoassessment of Vetiver grass enhanced with EDTA soil amendment grown in single and mixed heavy metal–contaminated soil [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Over the years, ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate (EDTA) has been widely used for many purposes. However, there are inadequate phytoassessment studies conducted using EDTA in Vetiver grass. Hence, this study evaluates the phytoassessment (growth performance,

The Role of Chaperone-Mediated Autophagy in Huntingtin Degradation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Huntington Disease (HD) is caused by an abnormal expansion of polyQ tract in the protein named huntingtin (Htt). HD pathology is featured by accumulation and aggregation of mutant Htt in striatal and cortical neurons.

A Framework for Standardised Tissue Sampling and Processing During Resection of Diffuse Intracranial Glioma: Joint Recommendations From Four RANO Groups [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Surgical resection represents the standard of care for people with newly diagnosed diffuse gliomas, and the neuropathological and molecular profile of the resected tissue guides clinical management and forms the basis for research.
