Four-wave mixing in EDFAs

A study is presented of four-wave mixing (FWM) in L- and C-band EDFAs. From experiments, it has been observed that FWM scales with the length of Er-doped fibre. It is shown theoretically that FWM crosstalk from EDFAs considerably exceeds that from NZDSF fibre in DWDM L-band systems and leads to a penalty of up to 1 dB in terms of the Q parameter.

Waveguide EDFA gain equalisation filter

The authors present a filter designed to flatten the gain of an EDPA system over a 30 nm bandwidth. The filter consists of cascaded couplers and delays, and is fabricated with planar silica waveguides.
