Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

How much do we really lose?—Yield losses in the proximity of natural landscape elements in agricultural landscapes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
Natural landscape elements (NLEs) in agricultural landscapes contribute to biodiversity and ecosystem services, but are also regarded as an obstacle for large‐scale agricultural production.

Syagrus flexuosa (Mart.) Becc. (Arecaceae) seedling recruitment at the edge and interior of Cerrado remnants

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2022
The edge effect has impacts on seed and seedling survival due to modifications in biotic and abiotic factors. Often, large-seeded tree species lost seed vectors in the forest edge due to the rarity or absence of large frugivores at this habitat type.

An examination of the 'edge effect' in the measurement of contact lens oxygen transmissibility [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
The difficulty in interpreting previously published estimates of the oxygen permeability of rigid gas permeable contact lens materials has led to the postulation that the 'edge effect' contributes to an overestimation of individual oxygen ...

Edge effect on weevils and spiders [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The edge effect on weevils and spiders was tested along oak forest – meadow transects using sweep-net samples at the Síkfökút Project in Hungary.

Edge Effect Analysis and Edge Defect Detection of Titanium Alloy Based on Eddy Current Testing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Titanium alloy is widely used in the area of aerospace and aviation due to its excellent properties. Eddy current testing (ECT) is among the most extensively used non-destructive techniques for titanium alloy material inspection.

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Prediction of contra-rotating open rotor broadband noise in isolated and installed configurations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Broadband noise is a significant part of the noise emitted by contra-rotating open rotors. Several noise sources can contribute to the total broadband sound field, with the most dominant ones probably being trailing edge noise, rotor-wake interaction ...

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Landscape structure is a major driver of plant and arthropod diversity in natural European forest fragments

open access: yesEcosphere, 2022
Disentangling the effects of different landscape and local attributes on the biota of habitat patches is often challenging. In Central European forest‐steppe ecosystems the high number of forest fragments and the relatively homogenous matrix between them
