Experimental and numerical investigation of leading edge Krueger flaps at low Reynolds numbers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Recent publications examining the flight of Eagles have shown that leading edge feather deflections occur on the lower surface of the wings in free flight to create a leading edge flap analogous to a Krueger flap system.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Multi-Scale Anisotropic Gaussian Kernels for Image Edge Detection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In this paper, a new edge detection method is proposed where multi-scale anisotropic Gaussian kernels (AGKs) are used to obtain an edge map from an input image.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

FDC2214-based Measurement System of Crude Oil Water Cut

open access: yesShiyou jixie, 2023
It is very important to find a reasonable method to measure the water volume fraction of crude oil.By using the capacitance method, according to the measurement principle of parallel plate capacitor,FDC2214 with opposite arm electrode structure was used ...

The root system of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) at the margins of regenerated stands

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2017
The paper aims to contribute to the determination of reasons causing the irregular growth of young pedunculate oaks occurring at the margins of naturally and artificially regenerated plots neighbouring with adult stands on alluvial sites.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Living on the edge: Roads and edge effects on small mammal populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
1 Roads may affect wildlife populations through habitat loss and disturbances, as they create an abrupt linear edge, increasing the proportion of edge exposed to a different habitat.

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.
