Gerontological Education for Baccalaureate Nursing Students

In a three year project at the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, uniform gerontological content and clinical experiences with older adults were developed and implemented for all sophomores, juniors, and seniors. During the period of the project, these students cared for older adults in acute, home, and long-term settings.

These findings reveal that an emphasis on death and dying in baccalaureate nursing schools has definitely increased over the past 20 years. Ninety-five percent of the schools reported here have some emphasis on death and dying. The majority of nursing students take the death and dying offerings.
