Edwardsiella tarda Bacteremia

Presented are two case reports of patients with Edwardsiella bacteremia who survived after chloramphenicol and gentamicin therapy in one case and cephalothin and kanamycin therapy in the other case. Of four previously reported patients, only one survived.

Edwardsiella tarda is a rare causative agent of human infection, predominantly associated with gastroenteritis. We describe a fatal case of urosepsis caused by E. tarda. The patient's underlying condition of advanced uterine cancer may have contributed to the development of the infection.

Summary Isolation of Edwardsiella tarda in humans has been associated with an asymptomatic carrier state as well as mild, self-limited diarrheal illness. Edwardsiella tarda is an uncommon enteric bacterium which has been found generally in animal hosts and occasionally in human feces. Three cases of extraintestinal infection caused by E. tarda which are described herein include a typhoid-like illness, peritonitis with sepsis, and cellulitis from a wound acquired while fishing.
