Quantum Transport Enhancement by Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Quantum mechanics still provides new unexpected effects when considering the transport of energy and information. Models of continuous time quantum walks, which implicitly use time-reversal symmetric Hamiltonians, have been intensely used to investigate ...

Expression and DNA methylation of 20S proteasome subunits as prognostic and resistance markers in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Comprehensive analysis of genomic mutations, gene expression, DNA methylation, and pathway analysis of TCGA data was carried out to define cancer types in which proteasome subunits expression is associated with worse survival. Albeit the effect of specific proteasome subunits on cellular function, the main role of the proteasome is better evaluated ...

Most Supermassive Black Holes must be Rapidly Rotating [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We use the integrated spectrum of the X-ray background and quasars Spectral Energy Distribution to derive the contribution of quasars to the energy output of the Universe. We find a lower limit for the energy from accretion onto black holes of 6%, of the

Dose‐dependent induction of epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in 3D melanoma models by non‐thermal plasma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Non‐thermal plasma treatment of melanoma cells induced epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in a dose‐dependent fashion. This report highlights the critical need to further investigate potential adverse effects of non‐thermal plasma for cancer therapy and to optimize treatment parameters for clinical translation. Despite the promising results of non‐

Research advances in phase behavior of multi-component thermal fluids in heavy oil production

open access: yesYouqi dizhi yu caishoulu
The reserves of heavy oil far exceed those of conventional oil, but heavy oil is difficult to exploit due to its high viscosity and density. Thus, the efficient and economical development of heavy oil has become a research focus in the petroleum field ...

A nucleotide‐independent, pan‐RAS‐targeted DARPin elicits anti‐tumor activity in a multimodal manner

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We report a Designed Ankyrin Repeat Protein that binds and inhibits RAS proteins, which serve as central cell signaling hubs and are essential for the progression of many cancers. Its unique feature is that it does not discriminate between different RAS isoforms or mutations and is capable of binding to RAS in both its active (GTP‐bound) and inactive ...

The critical role of DNA damage‐inducible transcript 4 (DDIT4) in stemness character of leukemia cells and leukemia initiation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Stemness properties, including quiescence, self‐renewal, and chemoresistance, are closely associated with leukemia relapse. Here, we demonstrate that DNA damage‐inducible transcript 4 (DDIT4) is induced in the hypoxic bone marrow niche and is essential for maintaining the stemness of AML1‐ETO9a leukemia cells.
