Interactions between sleep habits and self-control
Good sleep habits and effective self-control are important components of successful functioning. Unfortunately chronic sleep loss and impaired self-control are common occurrences for many individuals which can lead to difficulty with daily self-control ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Is Attention Really Effort? Revisiting Daniel Kahneman’s Influential 1973 Book Attention and Effort
Daniel Kahneman was not the first to suggest that attention and effort are closely associated, but his 1973 book Attention and Effort, which claimed that attention can be identified with effort, cemented the association as a research paradigm in the ...

Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Identifying asynchronies: Ineffective effort
Mechanical ventilation is a common issue in critically ill patients. It is a lifesaving treatment but also can cause some complications. Patient-ventilator asynchronies are frequent but are often underdiagnosed and they are a serious problem that is ...

How hard did you try? A scoping review of the literature on effort investment in math
Like most high-level human skills, such as reading or playing the piano, learning math requires thousands of hours of effort. Despite its importance, research on effort in math remains limited.

Determinist beliefs have been shown to impact basic motor preparation, prosocial behavior, performance monitoring, and voluntary inhibition, presumably by diminishing the recruitment of cognitive resources for self-regulation.

At first glance, the type of effort required to solve a chess puzzle and run a marathon seem fundamentally different. This paper argues that’s wrong. I present a novel "mental-effort first" account in which all effort is fundamentally mental in nature.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.
