Pumping Venom: Valvilli Architecture in Diacamma (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Implications for Stinger Functionality

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 9, September 2026.
The insect stinger is among the best‐known venom‐delivery structures, yet its valvilli—paired flaps within the valve chamber—remain poorly understood. Using micro‐CT, histology, serial block‐face SEM and CLSM in the ant Diacamma nr. indicum, we show that the valvilli are not uniformly flexible flaps but are materially differentiated structures with ...

Population Dynamics of Greenhouse Thrips (Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis) on Avocado Under Single and Combined Predator Releases

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 3, September 2026.
The greenhouse thrips, Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bouché, 1833), is an important avocado pest in New Zealand, where repeated infestations reduce leaf quality and tree vigour. To assess biological control stability under different predator assemblages, this study evaluated thrips population dynamics and predator survival across two sequential phases ...

Drought stress modulates indirect defense via bottom‐up effects in tomato and wheat

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 9, Page 8499-8511, September 2026.
Different water regimes can have a significant impact on plant morphology and defense pathways in tomato and wheat, triggering multiple olfactory choices in biocontrol agents of key insect pests. These findings could be used to implement biocontrol strategies within the IPM context under a changing climate scenario.
