Association Between the Methylation Statuses at CpG Sites in the Promoter Region of the SLCO1B3, RNA Expression and Color Change in Blue Eggshells in Lushi Chickens

open access: goldFrontiers in Genetics, 2019
The formation mechanism underlying the blue eggshell characteristic has been discovered in birds, and SLCO1B3 is the key gene that regulates the blue eggshell color.

Research note: Comparative estimation of genetic parameters for eggshell pigmentation traits [PDF]

open access: yesPoultry Science
Eggshell color exhibits considerable variation, with the diversity particularly rich in shells where protoporphyrin serves as the primary pigment. The measurement of eggshell color typically employs the Commission International del’Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b*

Genome-wide association analysis of eggshell color of an F2 generation population reveals candidate genes in chickens

open access: yesAnimal
Eggshell color is an important visual characteristic that affects consumer preferences for eggs. Eggshell color, which has moderate to high heritability, can be effectively enhanced through molecular marker selection.

Effect of Eggshell Color and Thickness on Hatchability in Chinese Ring-Necked Pheasants

open access: hybridPoultry Science, 1985
Abstract Eggs from commercially developed Chinese ring-necked pheasants were categorized into five colors: blue, grey/white, tan, dark brown, and olive. Fertility was unaffected by the color of the eggshell; however, eggs with blue or tan colored shells had lower hatchability than those with olive, dark brown, or grey/white shells.

Effect of Inclusion of Blood Meal in Diets on Eggshell Color of Brown-egg Laying Hens [PDF]

open access: diamond, 2017
Background and Objective: The main brown-colored pigment in eggshells is protoporphyrin IX (PP9) produced from the hen’s eggshell gland. Blood Meal (BM), which is a by-product of animal processing industry, contains high amounts of Fe and PP9.

Oviposition time, flock age, and egg position in clutch in relation to brown eggshell color in laying hens

open access: hybridPoultry Science, 2016
In Australia and other parts of the world, table eggs with uniform brown eggshell color are well regarded by consumers. Brown eggshell color has been positively correlated with certain egg characteristics such as shell strength and egg specific gravity ...

Effects of genotype and age on eggshell cuticle coverage and color profile in modern laying hen strains

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2022
: The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of laying hen genotype and age on eggshell cuticle deposition. A total of 4,320 brown eggs were obtained from 3 modern hen strains (A, B, and C), currently used worldwide for commercial egg ...

Genetics and breeding of a black-bone and blue eggshell chicken line. 4. Responses to 3 cycles of selection for blue or green eggshell [PDF]

open access: yesPoultry Science
Considerable demand exists for blue and green eggs, especially in Southeast Asia. Although some chicken breeds lay eggs with shell colors ranging from light blue to dark green (olive), genetic lines producing uniform blue eggs or green eggs are preferred
