L'Elaeis melanococca, spontané en Amérique Centrale et du Sud, présente des qualités intéressantes : faible croissance en hauteur, adaptation à des écologies limites, résistance à des maladies graves. Son huile est riche en acides gras insaturés. L'hybride avec E. guineensis conserve certaines qualités.
