The infrastructure of aortic elastic fibers
Tissue and Cell, 1983Elastic fibers are composed of a central core of elastin that is amorphous and electron-lucent in conventional transmission electron micrographs and peripheral microfibrils. A complex infrastructure within the amorphous elastin of mature rat aorta is made visible by fixation and staining with a glutaraldehyde-ruthenium red mixture in phosphate buffer ...

Elastic Compression of a Fiber Network
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1995A constitutive equation for a planar fiber network under transverse compression is derived allowing for an in-plane fiber orientation distribution. The fibers are assumed to be well dispersed in space and to have a large aspect ratio and uniform diameter.

Elastic Fibers in Orbital Septum
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive SurgeryPurpose: To examine microscopically the nature of the elastic fibers of the orbital septum in elderly specimens in comparison with the young specimen. Methods: Histological evaluation of 15 tissues of the orbital septa from upper eyelid (8 right, 7 left) from 11 Japanese cadavers ...

Elastic Fibers in Unusual Dermatoses
Archives of Dermatology, 1955The elastic fibers of the skin are frequently involved in the histopathologic picture of a dermatosis. Since Unna's 1 first elaboration on the elastic fibers and their degenerated forms of elacin and kollastin, the elastic fibers have been considered as an entity.

A common class of fluid–structure interaction problems involves the dynamics of flexible fibers immersed in a Stokesian fluid. In biology, this topic arises in modeling the flagella or cilia involved in microorganism locomotion and mucal transport, in determining the shape of biofilm streamers, and in understanding how biopolymers such as microtubules ...

The calcification of elastic fiber
Journal of Atherosclerosis Research, 1965Summary Aortic calcification has been demonstrated in the experimental rabbit and rat. In the former species it has been produced by epinephrine injection, and in the latter by the feeding of β -aminopropionitrile. Calcification is initiated at foci of degenerated elastic fiber and accumulations of acid mucopolysaccharide.

Fragmentation of Elastic Fibers
Archives of Dermatology, 1977To the Editor.— The June 1976 issue of theArchivescontains an interesting report of a case of acquired cutis laxa. 1 Although we do not doubt the authors' statement that they observed "fragmentation and granulation" of elastic fibers in the skin sections they studied, we submit that Figure 4 of their article does not document that statement.

A number of important questions remain to be answered concerning our understanding of elastic tissues. The size and molecular weight of the elastin precursor remains to be clearly established. The number of proteins involved in the microfibrillar component of the elastic fiber are as yet undetermined, although it would appear that they are ...

Elastic fibers are components of virtually all mammalian connective tissues. Elastin, the major protein component of elastic fibers, has unique elastomeric properties which provide the reversible deformability that is critical to arterial vessels, lungs and skin.

This is an elementary introduction to the type of classical elasticity most likely to be exhibited by fibers. It relates to properties that are independent of direction in certain transverse planes, but which may be quite different in the axial direction that is normal to these planes.
