From metaphysical principles to dynamical laws [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
My thesis in this paper is: the modern concept of laws of motion—qua dynamical laws—emerges in 18th-century mechanics. The driving factor for it was the need to extend mechanics beyond the centroid theories of the late-1600s.

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Non-linear dynamic response and vibration of an imperfect three-phase laminated nanocomposite cylindrical panel resting on elastic foundations in thermal environments

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2017
This paper presents an analytical approach to investigate the non-linear dynamic response and vibration of an imperfect three-phase laminated nanocomposite cylindrical panel resting on elastic foundations in thermal environments.

Cartan's spiral staircase in physics and, in particular, in the gauge theory of dislocations

open access: yes, 2010
In 1922, Cartan introduced in differential geometry, besides the Riemannian curvature, the new concept of torsion. He visualized a homogeneous and isotropic distribution of torsion in three dimensions (3d) by the "helical staircase", which he constructed

Numerical analysis of subsoil-reinforced concrete slab interaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This article presents the numerical modeling of interaction between a reinforced concrete slab and subsoil using ABAQUS. Subsoil was simulated as both homogeneous half-space and inhomogeneous half-space.

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Analysis of Beams on Non-Linear Elastic Winkler Foundation [PDF]

open access: yesEngineering and Technology Journal, 2005
This paper deals with thin beams resting on non-linear Winkler foundations by using the secant modulus approach to specify the modulus of subgrade reaction.

Elastic Foundations as Heterogeneous Adventitial Boundary Condition for the Assessment of Aortic Wall and Peri-Aortic Stiffness from Dense-MRI Data Using Inverse FEM Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background: The establishment of in vivo, patient-specific, and regionally resolved techniques to quantify aortic properties is key for improving risk assessment in clinical practice and scientific understanding of cardiovascular growth and remodeling ...

Multiple-length-scale elastic instability mimics parametric resonance of nonlinear oscillators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Spatially confined rigid membranes reorganize their morphology in response to the imposed constraints. A crumpled elastic sheet presents a complex pattern of random folds focusing the deformation energy while compressing a membrane resting on a soft ...

What Do Large Language Models Know About Materials?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
If large language models (LLMs) are to be used inside the material discovery and engineering process, they must be benchmarked for the accurateness of intrinsic material knowledge. The current work introduces 1) a reasoning process through the processing–structure–property–performance chain and 2) a tool for benchmarking knowledge of LLMs concerning ...
