Elasto-plastic buckling of compression members as a coupled instability

Abstract In the paper the author shows that plastic deformations can be considered as a bifurcational instability of the atomic lattice. Thus, the plastic buckling of a compression bar is examined like a coupled instability between the general buckling by flexural and the local buckling by plastic deformations.

The dynamic buckling of a cylindrical shell subject to a uniform axial compression, which is a linear function of time, is examined within the framework of small strain elasto-plasticity. The material of the shell is incompressible and the effect of the elastic unloading is not taken into consideration.

Influence of elasto-plastic behavior of thin films on circular buckling structures

International Journal of Solids and Structures
International audience ; We report on circular buckles experimentally observed by optical and atomic force microscopy on gold ductile thin films deposited by physical vapor deposition on silicon wafers. It is shown that, whatever the radius blister dimensions, their maximum deflections are higher than those expected by the elastic theory.

Abstract In this paper, a numerical procedure to determine the deflections at the free end and along the central line of buckled elasto-plastic flexible bars is introduced. Because of the large deflection of the bar, the nonlinear theory of bending is used to solve the problem at hand.
