Uber sein Leben ist kaum mehr bekannt als uber das seines Lehrers Parmenides. Wie dieser ist er im suditalienischen Elea geburtig, wo er sich wohl auch lange Zeit aufhalt. Einen Besuch in Athen bezeugen Platon und Plutarch; dort horen ihn angeblich Perikles, Kallias und Sokrates.
