Optimized design of micromachined electric field mills to maximize electrostatic field sensitivity
This paper describes the design optimization of a micromachined electric field mill, in relation to maximizing its output signal. The cases studied are for a perforated electrically grounded shutter vibrating laterally over sensing electrodes.

A new electric field mill array with each of the mill’s rotor controlled precisely by a GPS module: Equipment and initial results [PDF]
We have newly designed an electrostatic sensor, called an electric field mill (EFM), to simplify the estimation of the charge position and charge amount transferred by lightning discharges.

A new network of electric field mills at the Pierre Auger Observatory [PDF]
Abstract The Pierre Auger Observatory is the largest ground-based experiment for the detection of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In a hybrid approach, many detectors – including radio antennas – observe the extensive air showers induced by cosmic rays.

Development of Wireless Electric Field Mill for Atmospheric Electric Field Observation
Rotating-vane electric field mill (REFM) sensor is one of the popular methods to measure atmospheric quasi-static electric field. Lightning incident occasion can be predicted by observing electric fields strength in atmosphere. In this paper an integration of REFM with an online wireless data monitoring system for long distance observation and data ...

Investigation of a Micromachined Electric Field Mill Using Dielectric Shutter
AbstractThis paper investigates a new type of micromachined electric field mill (MEFM) fabricated using a silicon dielectric shutter. The performance of the MEFM is investigated as a function of the dimensional parameters for shutter perforation repetition period, width of perforations and electrodes, shutter thickness, and the gap between shutter and ...

Model of response of an electric field mill operating during suborbital flight [PDF]
A rotating-vane electric field mill was used to measure the electric field at the base of a series of vehicles as they passed through the ionosphere and reentered the atmosphere. Anticipated rapid and large variations in measured electric fields required a time response of a few milliseconds and a dynamic range from 40 to 50 000 V/m.
