Statistical analysis of spatial and temporal variations in atmospheric electric fields from a regional array of field mills [PDF]
AbstractElectric fields and currents of the global electric circuit have been measured at different locations and time periods around the globe, but a long‐term analysis from a regional array of electric field mills has never been performed. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida has an array of over 30 electric field mills that have been continuously ...

One of the popular methods to measure atmospheric quasi-static electric field is by using rotating-vane electric field mill (REFM) sensor. By observing electric fields strength in atmosphere, occasion of lightning incident can be forecasted. This paper proposes an integration of REFM with an online wireless data monitoring system for long distance ...

Lightning discharges registration by the electric field mill
Abstract Analysis of opportunities of use of the electric field mill for lightning discharges detection on the basis of data of an experiment is carried out in the work. Data of joint registration of lightning discharges by the lightning location systems and by the electric field mill are presented.

Operational analysis of electric field mills as lightning warning systems in Colombia
Electrostatic field measurements taken in Bogotá, Colombia, during thunderstorms in November (the rainy season due to inter-tropical confluence zone over central Colombia) were used to study the performance of an isolated electric field sensor and ...

Retrieving Storm Electric Fields from Aircraft Field Mill Data. Part I: Theory
Abstract It is shown that the problem of retrieving storm electric fields from an aircraft instrumented with several electric field mill sensors can be expressed in terms of a standard Lagrange multiplier optimization problem. The method naturally removes aircraft charge from the retrieval process without having to use a high-voltage ...

Micromachined Electric Field Mill Employing a Vertical Moving Shutter
AbstractThis paper presents a new type of micromachined electric field mill (MEFM) for measuring dc electric fields. This MEFM employs thermal actuators for vertical movement of an electrically grounded shutter, to mill the amplitude of a dc electric field incident on underlying sense electrodes. It addresses the main drawbacks of existing MEFMs, which

Impact factors in calibration and application of field mill for measurement of DC electric field with space charges [PDF]
The DC electric field is sometimes accompanied by space charges caused by the partial discharge in the air, which impacts DC electric field measurements. This paper describes the impact factors in the calibration and application of the field mill for measuring the DC electric field with space charges.

Retrieving Storm Electric Fields from Aircraft Field Mill Data. Part II: Applications
Abstract The Lagrange multiplier theory developed in Part I of this study is applied to complete a relative calibration of a Citation aircraft that is instrumented with six field mill sensors. When side constraints related to average fields are used, the Lagrange multiplier method performs well in computer simulations.

Operational analysis of electric field mills as lightning warning systems in Colombia
Electrostatic field measurements obtained in Bogota-Colombia during thunderstorm episodes in November (common raining season due to the intertropical confluence zone over central Colombia) were used to study the performance of an isolated electric field sensor and analyze its most important operational characteristics.
