Incorporating electrostatic effects into the effective stress relation - Insights from chalk experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Which forces are responsible for holding highly porous chalks together? We use the effective stress to quantify the electrostatic effects around particle contacts originating from the adsorption of ions onto charged mineral surfaces.

Electrostatically actuated encased cantilevers

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2018
Background: Encased cantilevers are novel force sensors that overcome major limitations of liquid scanning probe microscopy. By trapping air inside an encasement around the cantilever, they provide low damping and maintain high resonance frequencies for ...

Design Strategies and Emerging Applications of High‐Performance Flexible Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors underpin wearable and soft electronics. This review links sensing physics, including contact resistance modulation, quantum tunneling and percolation, to unified materials/structure design. We highlight composite and graded architectures, interfacial/porous engineering, and microstructured 3D conductive networks

Chirality and Organization of Adsorbates Modify Surface Phonon Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Chirality and molecular organization are shown to influence surface phonon dynamics in gold films. Time‐resolved Joule heating measurements reveal that ordered homochiral monolayers increase the Debye temperature and disordered layers reduce it, while ordered racemic controls have no effect.

Electrostatic Effects on the Conformation and Elasticity of Hyaluronic Acid, a Moderately Flexible Polyelectrolyte

open access: yes, 2017
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a charged polysaccharide with an intrinsic stiffness intermediate between flexible and semiflexible polymers. To investigate the interplay of that stiffness with solution electrostatic interactions, we perform single-molecule ...

A Two-Axis Orthogonal Resonator for Variable Sensitivity Mode Localization Sensing

open access: yesSensors
This paper experimentally demonstrates a mode localization sensing approach using a single two-axis orthogonal resonator. The resonator consists of concentric multi-rings connected by elliptic springs that enable two orthogonal oscillation modes.
