Computers that smile: Humor in the interface [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
It is certainly not the case that wen we consider research on the role of human characteristics in the user interface of computers that no attention has been paid to the role of humor.

Agents, Believability and Embodiment in Advanced Learning Environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
On the World Wide Web we see a growing number of general HCI interfaces, interfaces to educational or entertainment systems, interfaces to professional environments, etc., where an animated face, a cartoon character or a human-like virtual agent has the ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Nodding detection system based on head motion and voice rhythm

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing, 2021
Human beings communicate using more than verbal communication. To communicate smoothly, humans tend to use nonverbal information such as nodding during embodied interactions.

Artefact Ecologies: Supporting Embodied Meeting Practices with Distance Access [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Frameworks such as activity theory, distributed cognition and structuration theory, amongst others, have shown that detailed study of contextual settings where users work (or live) can help the design of interactive systems.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Comparing mixed reality use in ecologically distinct urban sites: embodied tools for participatory environmental design

open access: yesFrontiers in Virtual Reality
Mixed reality (MR) environments offer new opportunities for embodied interaction in participatory design processes. This study evaluates whether mobile MR tools influence ecological awareness and co-design behavior across two distinct urban settings ...

Embodiment as a means for scaffolding young childrenʼs social skill acquisition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this paper, we discuss the notion of embodiment in the context of the ECHOES project, which aims at developing a multi-modal interactive environment for scaffolding young typically developing (TD) children and children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) in ...
