Emergence and Reduction Combined in Phase Transitions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In another paper (Butterfield 2011), one of us argued that emergence and reduction are compatible, and presented four examples illustrating both. The main purpose of this paper is to develop this position for the example of phase transitions.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Tick exposure biomarkers: A One Health approach to new tick surveillance tools

open access: yesCurrent Research in Parasitology and Vector-Borne Diseases
The spread of tick-borne disease (TBD) is escalating globally, driven by climate change and socio-economic shifts, underlining the urgency to improve surveillance, diagnostics, and control strategies.

Emerging viruses – is there an emerging pattern? [PDF]

open access: yesThe Biochemist, 2017
The Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014 and the spread of Zika across the Americas in 2016 have thrust previously obscure viruses into the media spotlight. But is something new really going on? What can we expect in future? Is there anything we can do?

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Update on tick-borne pathogens detection methods within ticks

open access: yesCurrent Research in Parasitology and Vector-Borne Diseases
Ticks are known vectors of various pathogens, including bacteria, parasites and viruses, that impact both animal and human health. Improving knowledge of the distribution of tick-borne pathogens, combined with their early detection in ticks, are ...

ACUTE ARTICULAR SYNDROME. THE CONCEPT OF EMERGENCY CARE IN RHEUMATOLOGY

open access: yesНаучно-практическая ревматология, 2018
The absence of a current emergency care system for rheumatic patients makes the solution of this problem relevant. Objective: to create and test a health care system for patients with acute articular syndrome (AAS) and to analyze the distribution of ...
