The Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1912The much-lauded, and as often denied, efficacy of ipecacuanha in the treatment of amebic dysentery was investigated experimentally by Vedder.1 Briefly, he found that certain preparations of ipecac exerted a marked lethal action on cultures of saprophytic amebae, paramecia, and balantidia.
