A Triggering Process for Nonlinear EMIC Waves Driven by the Compression of the Dayside Magnetosphere

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Using the Arase and Van Allen Probes satellite observations, we investigate the nonlinear electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) rising‐tone (RT) emissions with an increase of the solar wind dynamic pressure in the dayside magnetosphere.

“We always heal like this”: Illness management and identity expression in Latin American migrants in Spain

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract The following article seeks to explore and analyze the use of lay and traditional medicines among Latin migrants in Spain, and the way in which these forms of treatment are accompanied by identity discourses and collective representations.

Statistical analysis of EMIC waves in plasmaspheric plumes from Cluster observations

open access: yes, 2016
Recently, electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave generation in plasmaspheric plumes has been the subject of extensive discussion. Theory predicts that regions of detached cold, dense plasma immersed in relatively low background magnetic field should ...

Straddling “The Gulf Between Medicine and Law”: Medico‐legal addiction and Japanese psychiatry

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract Increasing punitive drug regulations in Japan amplify longstanding tensions within psychiatric practice, pushing psychiatrists to balance clinical obligations with complex socio‐legal demands. This article analyzes how psychiatrists specializing in illicit substance use disorders to navigate escalating criminalization by developing diagnostic ...

“Why can't they put us to sleep if we are suffering?”: La Nada and the desire for euthanasia among institutionalized older adults in Peru

open access: yesMedical Anthropology Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract In this article, I examine how institutionalized older adults in Peru articulate suffering through the idiom of la nada—“nothingness”—and how this shapes desires for euthanasia. Moving from close ethnography of bodies in space and time to structural and ethical discourses on euthanasia, I argue that calls for euthanasia arise not only from ...

Overview of Emic Triggered Chorus Emissions in Cluster Data

open access: yes, 2010
International audienceElectromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) triggered emissions have been recently observed onboard the Cluster spacecraft close to the plasmapause in the equatorial region of the magnetosphere (Pickett et al., 2010).

Evidence for a Mixture of Mirror Mode and Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves in the Martian Magnetosheath

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) and mirror-mode (MM) waves are widely observed in terrestrial and other planetary magnetosheaths. Even though linear theory supports that EMIC and MM waves may grow at comparable rates under suitable plasma conditions,

How pre‐service L2 English teachers use accounts to mitigate turn allocation to unwilling participants in microteaching

open access: yesThe Modern Language Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigates how pre‐service L2 English teachers manage turn allocation when student willingness to participate is uncertain or absent during microteaching sessions. Drawing on conversation analysis (CA), we examine video‐recorded teaching demonstrations conducted by undergraduate L2 English education majors in South Korea.

Magnetospheric multiscale observations of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves associated with cold ion heating in the Earth’s magnetosphere

open access: yesAIP Advances
Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves play a significant role in shaping the dynamics of Earth’s magnetosphere. On September 13, 2015, EMIC wave activity within the proton band was detected in the inner magnetosphere through observations made by the
