Muscle Mitochondrial Respiration and Cardiorespiratory Fitness Contribute to Slower Walking Speed of Older Individuals Who Identify as Black

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
While the etiology of race differences in mobility is multifactorial, our data indicate that muscle mitochondrial respiration and cardiorespiratory fitness may contribute to the slower walking speed of individuals who identify as Black compared to White.

Investigating the impact of kernel harmonization and deformable registration on inspiratory and expiratory chest CT images for people with COPD [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Paired inspiratory-expiratory CT scans enable the quantification of gas trapping due to small airway disease and emphysema by analyzing lung tissue motion in COPD patients. Deformable image registration of these scans assesses regional lung volumetric changes.

Projectron -- A Shallow and Interpretable Network for Classifying Medical Images [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
This paper introduces the `Projectron' as a new neural network architecture that uses Radon projections to both classify and represent medical images. The motivation is to build shallow networks which are more interpretable in the medical imaging domain.

FRODO: Free rejection of out-of-distribution samples: application to chest x-ray analysis [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
In this work, we propose a method to reject out-of-distribution samples which can be adapted to any network architecture and requires no additional training data. Publicly available chest x-ray data (38,353 images) is used to train a standard ResNet-50 model to detect emphysema.

Robotic multidisciplinary endometriosis surgery with multi‐visceral resection: evaluation of short‐term feasibility and safety outcomes

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Despite growing interest in robot‐assisted surgery, the literature remains limited on the application of robotic surgery for complex endometriosis surgery requiring multidisciplinary input for multi‐visceral resection. The aim of the study was to report the short‐term feasibility and safety outcomes of this technique from a high ...
