Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Quantum information as a non-Kolmogorovian generalization of Shannon's theory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this article we discuss the formal structure of a generalized information theory based on the extension of the probability calculus of Kolmogorov to a (possibly) non-commutative setting.

Partial discharge feature extraction based on synchrosqueezed windowed Fourier transform and multi-scale dispersion entropy

open access: yesMeasurement + Control, 2020
The recognition of partial discharge mode is an important indicator of the insulation condition in transformers, based on which maintenance can be arranged. Discharge feature extraction is the key to recognize discharge mode. To solve the problem of poor

Abnormal ECG Classification using Empirical Mode Decomposition and Entropy

open access: yesJurnal Rekayasa Elektrika, 2021
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Early detection followed by therapy is one of the efforts to reduce the mortality rate of this disease. One of the leading medical instruments for diagnosing heart disorders is the electrocardiogram (ECG). The shape of the ECG signal represents normal or abnormal heart conditions.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Development of Automated Sleep Stage Classification System Using Multivariate Projection-Based Fixed Boundary Empirical Wavelet Transform and Entropy Features Extracted from Multichannel EEG Signals

open access: yesEntropy, 2020
The categorization of sleep stages helps to diagnose different sleep-related ailments. In this paper, an entropy-based information–theoretic approach is introduced for the automated categorization of sleep stages using multi-channel electroencephalogram (

Functional Connectivity Linked to Cognitive Recovery After Minor Stroke

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Patients with minor stroke exhibit slowed processing speed and generalized alterations in functional connectivity involving frontoparietal cortex (FPC). The pattern of connectivity evolves over time. In this study, we examine the relationship of functional connectivity patterns to cognitive performance, to determine ...

Estimating Entropy of Data Streams Using Compressed Counting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The Shannon entropy is a widely used summary statistic, for example, network traffic measurement, anomaly detection, neural computations, spike trains, etc. This study focuses on estimating Shannon entropy of data streams.
