TacScope: A Miniaturized Vision‐Based Tactile Sensor for Surgical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
TacScope is a compact, vision‐based tactile sensor designed for robot‐assisted surgery. By leveraging a curved elastomer surface with pressure‐sensitive particle redistribution, it captures high‐resolution 3D tactile feedback. TacScope enables accurate tumor detection and shape classification beneath soft tissue phantoms, offering a scalable, low‐cost ...

The use of empirical orthogonal functions in quasigeostrophic numerical prediction models [PDF]

open access: yesTellus, 1974
An integrated quasi-geostrophic numerical prediction model is developed by using empirical orthogonal functions for the vertical representation. Friction is included in a simple way. Problems arising from the computations of the coefficients of the model are discussed using a linearized version of the corresponding 2-parameter (2 e.o.f.) model. Finally

GEOMAGNETIC FIELD CHARACTERISTICS REVEALED BY EMPIRICAL ORTHOGONAL FUNCTIONS

open access: yes, 2021
Using COV-OBS.x1 (Gillet et al., 2015) main geomagnetic field model, covering the time span 1840–2020, we decomposed the geomagnetic field at Earth’s surface, namely the vertical and horizontal components, in oscillation modes at various timescales by means of empirical orthogonal functions (EOF). The EOF analysis shows that the first three oscillation

Backpropagation Through Soft Body: Investigating Information Processing in Brain–Body Coupling Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study explores how information processing is distributed between brains and bodies through a codesign approach. Using the “backpropagation through soft body” framework, brain–body coupling agents are developed and analyzed across several tasks in which output is generated through the agents’ physical dynamics.

Human‐Scale Rotating Magnetic Field Delivery With Permanent Magnets Under Anatomic and Robotic Constraints

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Rotating magnetic fields (RMFs) are widely used for microrobot propulsion and control. We show that RMF generation with permanent magnets is mechanically feasible for many limb and intracranial applications but becomes constrained for thoracic targets.

An EOF-Based Global Plasmaspheric Electron Content Model and Its Potential Role in Vertical-Slant TEC Conversion

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Topside total electron content (TEC) data measured by COSMIC/FORMAT-3 during 2008 and 2016 were used to analyze and model the global plasmaspheric electron content (PEC) above 800 km with the help of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis ...

Force–Displacement Characterization of PNIPAM Microactuators

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A method to experimentally establish a force–displacement diagram of poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) microactuators, printed by 2PP, is presented herein. PNIPAM is a hydrogel whose volume and stiffness change with temperature due to the absorption or release of water.

Modeling sound speed profile based on ocean normal mode

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionStatistical methods such as empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) are often used to model the sound speed profile (SSP). However, their statistical nature often leads to the sample dependence and physical fuzziness.MethodThis study proposes a

Bio‐Inspired Object Retrieval via Proximity‐Guided Adaptive Thigmotactic Exploration and Neuromorphic Recognition

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Sparse active‐infrared proximity sensing is coupled to an adaptive thigmotactic controller for camera‐inaccessible object retrieval. After grasping, receptor‐informed encoding transforms force, temperature, and wrist force–torque signals into spike trains for spiking neural network recognition.
