Power Factor Correction Using EMTP-RV for Engineering Education

2019 54th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC), 2019
Power quality is one of the major requirements in power system operation and design. A power factor that is close to one is a good indicator for the overall power quality, especially for an electrical power system with high uptake of commercial loads with a large amount of inductance.

Research on lightning overvoltage in Ecuador 230kV GIS substation based on EMTP-RV

2021 IEEE 4th International Electrical and Energy Conference (CIEEC), 2021
The simulation model of a new 230 kV GIS substation in Ecuador was established by EMTP-RV. The lightning overvoltage levels of the main equipment in the substation under different modes of thunder wave invasion, different tower and substation operation are calculated, and the insulation coordination of each equipment is checked.

Modeling of Inverter-Based Resources Using Equivalent Current Sources in EMTP-RV

2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2020
This paper presents a time-domain, equivalent current source model (CSM) for inverter-based resources in EMTPRV for evaluating their harmonic impacts, behavior, and interactions with the grid. Whereas detailed inverter models can be accurate if the inverter design and parameters are precisely known, their simulations are time-consuming.

Evaluating Harmonic Diversity of Solar Farms Using Equivalent Current Sources in EMTP-RV

2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2020
This paper demonstrates the application of current source models (CSMs) in EMTP-RV to study the interaction of harmonic currents from inverter-based solar farms with the grid. The CSM represents the harmonic current injections of a solar farm at the high voltage side of its transformer.

Simulation of electromagnetic transients with EMTP-RV

2015
This chapter presented a summary on numerical methods used in EMTP (EMTPRV version) for the computation of electromagnetic transients. EMTP offers several options and modules for the simulation and analysis of complex power systems. EMTP offers a unified environment that can be applied to study power systems from steady-state conditions, to ...

Power Transformer and Surge Arrester Modeling for Fast Front Overvoltages Using EMTP-RV

2020 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D), 2020
Inadequately rated surge protection devices in a power system can result in partial, complete as well as catastrophic damage to assets from overvoltages. A conservative approach could be to adopt the highest value(s) of rated insulation level for a given voltage class, however, this approach may be uneconomical and impractical.

Modeling of Voltage Source Converter based HVDC system in EMTP-RV

2010 IEEE Electrical Power & Energy Conference, 2010
This paper presents a detailed model of a Voltage Source Converter (VSC) operated HVDC transmission system, simulated with EMTP-RV package, in order to investigate its operational performance. The VSC control strategy is explained using vector control. The effect of de-coupling between the control parameters is investigated by applying disturbances in ...
