Viral encephalitis and epilepsy [PDF]

open access: yesEpilepsia, 2008
Summary Viral encephalitis presents with seizures not only in the acute stage but also increases the risk of late unprovoked seizures and epilepsy. Acute symptomatic and late unprovoked seizures in different viral encephalitides are reviewed here. Among the sporadic viral encephalitides, Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is perhaps most frequently ...

A little less aggregation a little more replication: Viral manipulation of stress granules

open access: yesWIREs RNA, Volume 14, Issue 1, January/February 2023., 2023
Viruses depend entirely on host machinery and therefore aim to conquer the host and defeat its defenses to co‐opt its resources for its own replication. Improved understanding of how viruses counteract host immune responses such as stress granule assembly, detailed here, will inform future antiviral therapeutic strategies.

Measuring and Detecting Virality on Social Media: The Case of Twitter's Viral Tweets Topic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Social media posts may go viral and reach large numbers of people within a short period of time. Such posts may threaten the public dialogue if they contain misleading content, making their early detection highly crucial. Previous works proposed their own metrics to annotate if a tweet is viral or not in order to automatically detect them later ...

Bone marrow‐derived extracellular vesicles modulate the abundance of infiltrating immune cells in the brain and exert an antiviral effect against the Japanese encephalitis virus

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, Volume 4, Issue 12, Page 798-815, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have regenerative capacity and have reported a beneficial effect on the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in an encephalitis model. However, the MSCs do not cross the blood–brain barrier and have other disadvantages limiting their therapeutic utility scope.

Neural Replicator Analysis of the genus Flavivirus [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The results of applying neural replicator analysis (NRA) to the genomes of viruses belonging to the genus Flavivirus are presented. It is shown that the viral genomes considered in this study can be placed in five different cells of the viral genome table.

Etiology and prognosis of acute viral encephalitis and meningitis in Chinese children: a multicentre prospective study

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2017
Background In China, there were few studies about the pathogens of acute viral encephalitis and meningitis in children in recent years. The aims of this study were to characterize the etiology and prognosis of acute viral encephalitis and meningitis in ...

Weather extremes associated with increased Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus notifications in NSW: learnings for public health response

open access: yesAustralian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, Volume 46, Issue 6, Page 842-849, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Objective: To examine the sequence of environmental and entomological events prior to a substantial increase in Ross River virus (RRV) and Barmah Forest virus (BFV) notifications with a view to informing future public health response. Methods: Rainfall, tidal, mosquito and human arboviral notification data were analysed to determine the ...

THE LESIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM CAUSED BY THE VARICELLA-ZOSTER VIRUS IN CHILDREN

open access: yesДетские инфекции (Москва), 2016
To describe the spectrum of neurological complications in children with varicella and against the background of herpes zoster. The study included children at the age of 0—16 years (n = 84), who recovered from exanthematous form of the disease not longer ...

Aβ plaques do not protect against HSV‐1 infection in a mouse model of familial Alzheimer's disease, and HSV‐1 does not induce Aβ pathology in a model of late onset Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 33, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Abstract The possibility that the etiology of late onset Alzheimer's disease is linked to viral infections of the CNS has been actively debated in recent years. According to the antiviral protection hypothesis, viral pathogens trigger aggregation of Aβ peptides that are produced as a defense mechanism in response to infection to entrap and neutralize ...
