Endemic fungal infections in the Asia-Pacific region [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Mycology, 2011
Endemic mycoses are important fungal infections in their respective habitats. In the Asia-Pacific region, an accurate epidemiological picture of endemic mycoses is elusive; few epidemiological surveys have been performed, and limited laboratory facilities and experience with fungal infections have further hampered recognition of infection.

Schmallenberg virus epidemiology and regional control strategies: diagnostics, vaccines, and vector management

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
Schmallenberg virus (SBV) is an emerging orthobunyavirus transmitted by Culicoides midges. It poses a serious global health threat to ruminants, especially during pregnancy, causing abortion, stillbirths, and congenital malformations.

Molecular characterization of Fasciola hepatica in endemic regions of Colombia

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2023
Fasciola hepatica is a zoonotic trematode that affects a wide range of hosts, including cattle, sheep, and goats. The economic impact of the parasite on the cattle industry is significant, with high losses reported worldwide.

Institutional Hookworm Disease in a Non-Endemic Region [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Hygiene, 1923
Conditions in institutions for children or defectives may become peculiarly favourable to the propagation of hookworm disease. The subject of the present study is a long-standing infection with Ancylostoma duodenale in the Hospital for the Insane at Goodna, Queensland, the largest of the three hospitals for the insane maintained by the State Government.

Urinary biomarkers indicate pediatric renal injury among rural farming communities in Sri Lanka

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Pediatric renal injury is an emerging health concern in communities affected by chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu). Early detection of susceptibilities through highly sensitive and specific biomarkers can lead to effective therapeutic ...

Cost risk benefit analysis to support chemoprophylaxis policy for travellers to malaria endemic countries. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
BACKGROUND: In a number of malaria endemic regions, tourists and travellers face a declining risk of travel associated malaria, in part due to successful malaria control.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
