Computed tomography reveals the endocranial anatomy of Crocodylia: Implications for phylogenetic relationships and ecomorphological convergence across Crocodylomorpha

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The evaluation of the endocranial anatomy of 43 crocodylian species reveals several differences, including variation in the curvature of the encephalic endocast, the size of the endosseous labyrinth and paratympanic sinuses, and the presence of additional snout sinuses.

Visualizing brain size evolution in platyrrhine monkeys: a skull reconstruction, endocast extrapolation, and volume comparison of Cebupithecia sarmientoi [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
In 2018, at the paleontological site La Venta, Colombia, the first complete monkey skull from the Middle Miocene epoch (11-13 MYA) was recovered. Paleontologists identified the skull as Cebupithecia sarmientoi, an extinct species of platyrrhine monkey ...

Atlas of cortical sulcal imprints on Pan endocasts

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
This comprehensive atlas documents the frequency, position, and variability of cortical sulcal imprints across 21 extant Pan endocasts, providing the first quantitative baseline for comparative paleoneurology. This atlas serves as a reference for distinguishing ancestral from derived features in hominin brain evolution.

Functional morphology and biomechanics of the locomotor apparatus in the large Late Triassic carnivore Postosuchus kirkpatricki (Archosauria: Rauisuchidae)

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
A three‐dimensional model is used to analyze the locomotor biomechanics of the large Late Triassic archosaurian reptile Postosuchus kirkpatricki. The study finds that it is more uncertain than previously concluded whether it was quadrupedal or bipedal, and plantigrade or digitigrade, but it clearly had locomotor specializations including large hindlimb

Description of the skull, braincase, and dentition of Moschognathus whaitsi (Dinocephalia, Tapinocephalia), and its palaeobiological and behavioral implications

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 7, Page 1713-1748, July 2026.
Abstract A subadult Moschognathus whaitsi from the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, was scanned using synchrotron radiation X‐ray computed tomography (SRXCT). Its subadult state allowed the cranial bones and teeth to be identified and individually reconstructed in 3D.

Ethmosphenoid endocasts elucidate evolutionary brain divergences and interrelationships of stem tetrapods (Sarcopterygii, Tetrapodomorpha)

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 12, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
Abstract Nearly half of all living vertebrate diversity can be traced back to a single lineage of lobe‐finned fishes (piscine sarcopterygians) that radiated during the Palaeozoic Era. In recent years, the phylogenetic framework of tetrapodomorph fishes has largely stabilized, with the exception of the ‘Osteolepiformes’, the interrelationships of which ...

First virtual reconstructions of the frontal lobe and temporal pole of the Taung (Australopithecus africanus) endocast

open access: yes, 2011
International audienceThe Taung type specimen for Australopithecus africanus includes a natural endocast that reproduces external morphology of a large portion of the right cerebral hemisphere, and a separate fragment of the fossilized face that ...

Structural extremes in a cretaceous dinosaur.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2007
Fossils of the Early Cretaceous dinosaur, Nigersaurus taqueti, document for the first time the cranial anatomy of a rebbachisaurid sauropod. Its extreme adaptations for herbivory at ground-level challenge current hypotheses regarding feeding function and
