Sensory nerves in the spotlight of the stem cell niche. [PDF]

open access: yesStem Cells Transl Med, 2021
Schematic illustration summarizing the findings from genetic deletion of EP4 specifically from sensory nerve fibers in the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell niche. Abstract Niches are specialized tissue microenvironments that control stem cells functioning.

Assessing the combined effect of surface topography and substrate rigidity in human bone marrow stem cell cultures. [PDF]

open access: yesEng Life Sci, 2022
Abstract The combined effect of surface topography and substrate rigidity in stem cell cultures is still under‐investigated, especially when biodegradable polymers are used. Herein, we assessed human bone marrow stem cell response on aliphatic polyester substrates as a function of anisotropic grooved topography and rigidity (7 and 12 kPa).

Ablation of sensory nerves favours melanoma progression. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Cell Mol Med, 2020
Abstract The tumour mass is composed not only of heterogeneous neoplastic cells, but also a variety of other components that may affect cancer cells behaviour. The lack of detailed knowledge about all the constituents of the tumour microenvironment restricts the design of effective treatments.

Dopamine-loaded nanoparticle systems circumvent the blood–brain barrier restoring motor function in mouse model for Parkinson’s Disease

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive and chronic neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. Early treatment for PD is efficient; however, long-term systemic medication commonly leads to deleterious side-effects.

Staphylococcus epidermidis role in the skin microenvironment

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 23, Issue 9, Page 5949-5955, September 2019., 2019
Abstract Wound healing is a complex dynamic physiological process in response to cutaneous destructive stimuli that aims to restore the cutaneous’ barrier role. Deciphering the underlying mechanistic details that contribute to wound healing will create novel therapeutic strategies for skin repair.

Glioblastoma‐activated pericytes support tumor growth via immunosuppression

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 1232-1239, April 2018., 2018
Glioblastoma‐activated pericytes develop an immunosuppressive phenotype, reducing T‐cell activation through the induction of an anti‐inflammatory response. Pericytes support glioblastoma growth in vitro and in vivo. Abstract Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor, with an extremely poor prognosis.
